HIV Research Training Grant

Director: Paul Krogstad, MD

The UCLA multidisciplinary HIV Research Training Grant was established in 1991 as an NIAID sponsored program to provide financial support and mentorship to promising postdoctoral fellows interested in a wide variety of HIV-related topics. These include basic retrovirology, retroviral immunology, clinical therapeutics, and HIV epidemiology. Trainees are selected who have an interest in one of these areas, and a mentor is selected from within a large list of faculty within the Schools of Medicine and Public health. Trainees are expected to enroll in formal coursework and to complete a project chosen with their mentor.

Examples of projects undertaken by recent trainees include examination of factors involved in the assembly of HIV particles, examination of the role of IL6 in B cell survival, studies of organ specific chemokine receptors in the progression and pathogenesis of HIV, and clinical studies of cytokines as adjunctive treatment for HIV infected adults. Stipend support for fellows is typically of two to three years duration. Through regular meetings, the progress of fellows is monitored by the mentor and faculty members who oversee training in the basic sciences, epidemiology, and clinical research.
