Post-Doctoral Training

Director: Jeffery F. Miller, Ph.D.

The UCLA Microbial Pathogenesis Training Grant provides the foundation for an integrated research training program emphasizing the molecular and cellular biology of microbial pathogens and host-pathogen interaction. At both the predoctoral and postdoctoral level, the program's goal is to train scientist to conduct basic research in microbial pathogenesis using molecular, genetic, cellular and immunological techniques. The training faculty includes 24 preceptors (18 Ph.D., 3 M.D., 3 M.D., Ph.D.) with appointments at the UCLA School of Medicine and the UCLA College of Letters and Science. Training faculty span a broad range of related research interests which include virology, bacteriology, parasitology, mycology and the immunology of host-microbe interactions. Our faculty have excellent publication, funding and training records. This program has been in operation since 1988 with current funding two postdoctoral trainees per year. Faculty attracting qualified postdoctoral fellows through a variety of channels. Trainees are selected for funding on a competitive basis after a thorough review of their academic and research accomplishments. Appointments are renewed on a yearly basis with a maximum of three years of support for predoctoral trainees and two years of support for postdoctoral trainees. The training program includes coursework focused on microbial pathogenesis and participation in the Microbial Pathogenesis Seminar Series. The seminar series includes forma research presentations by trainees, seminars by invited speakers and a journal club in which all trainees will participate. Research presentation at national meeting, participation in training grant activities at the yearly retreat participation in a course devoted to ethics and accountability in biomedical research, and career counseling are also emphasized. The major thrust of our training focuses on excellence in laboratory research.
