Tumor Cell Biology Training Program

Director: Fred Fox, PhD

The Tumor Cell Training Program, now in its 24rd year, supports research training for four postdoctoral working on signal transduction and cancer and related areas. Two program-administered courses (M294: Molecular Basis of Cancer, and M294L: Cancer Histopathology) are required of all predoctoral trainees and of postdoctoral trainees with no previous oncology-related course work (trainees with MD degrees are excused from course M294L). The Program sponsors an informal monthly seminar limited to the trainees and their mentors in which each trainee presents a yearly update on her/his research. Trainees are encouraged to attend and present their work in the weekly campus-wide Cancer Center Research Conference and to attend other UCLA oncology seminars.

The Training Program is open to postdoctoral applicants who are US citizens or permanent residents and hold the PhD, MD, or DVM degree and have two years or less of previous postdoctoral NRSA support. Awards include the appropriate NIH-mandated stipend, tuition and fees for predoctoral trainees (annual total amount subject to current NIH policy) and a contribution toward health insurance for postdoctoral trainees. Faculty who sponsor applicants must provide supplementary funding that will meet recommended departmental stipend levels. The Program also provides travel allowances to assist trainees who attend relevant scientific meetings.
